This is an on-call position with hours between 8:30 am - 3:00 pm, Monday-Friday.  The hourly wage rate is $20.82 , dependent on credentials and experience.  The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul also offes a competitive benefit package including full health and pension benefits.

 

Organization Overview

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Vancouver Island has been supporting people in need on Vancouver Island since 1916, and recently celebrated our 100th anniversary on September 27th 2016. Focused on impacting the lives of people affected by poverty, the society offers emergency relief services while maintaining a focus and commitment to addressing the root causes that contribute to poverty in our communities. The Society currently provides 90 units of supportive and affordable housing, with an additional 42 units now available with the opening of Rosalie’s Village in Saanich in September of 2006. Saint Vincent de Paul provides a wide range of community supports through the Social Concern Program including a food bank, home visit program, education, training and emergency rent/utility payments. Through the Ozanam Centre the Society operates a community integration program for persons with developmental disabilities, helping people achieve a higher quality of life. Believing in sustainable development, the Society operates 6 thrift stores that contribute to both financial sustainability and the provision of clothing and household items to those in need. More than 200 people make up the Society membership, supported by more than 300 volunteers and 75 staff.

 

Position Overview

The Frederic Ozanam Centre is a day program for adults with mental and physical disabilities.  We also offer a variety of activities and programing to our participants. This position will support the work of the Society and the Ozanam Program through active involvement with the participants and staff.  The successful candidate will have a fundamental knowledge of working with people with disabilities and the programs offered through the Ozanam Program and will work collaboratively to support the participants.  This position reports to the Ozanam Program Manager.

The Community Support Worker ensures the well-being of participants in the program and promotes their development.  A key component of this job is to assist the participants in their physical, social, emotional, educational, recreational and vocational development goals and assist them in working toward the attainment of these goals.

 

A Ministry of Justice Clearance Letter is required prior to hiring.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Identify potential challenges and provide input into the development of program plans to achieve participant’s goals
  • Provide emotional support to participants and monitor their well - being
  • Ensure that participants actively participate in the planning process of their individual programs
  • Provide input for Person Center Plans and Training or Community plans as and when necessary
  • Provide support and feedback to the participants and/or the family
  • Recognize potential emergency situations, analyze situations accurately, and develop strategies to deal with such situations; i.e.: dispensing medication; dealing with participant’s aggressive behavior to ensure no harm comes to the participant and/or the public following the Society’s prescribed policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Complete all reports and recordkeeping in an accurate and timely manner
  • Plans and delivers participant programs
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, constructiveness, and willingness to work and assume responsibility for daily challenges.
  • Assist participants with life skills training and behavior management
  • Facilitate physical, recreational and educational activities
  • Provide participants with a positive, caring role model
  •  Participate actively in staff training
  •  Provide direction to volunteers, relief workers and practicum students such as demonstrating work procedures or equipment
  • Ensure health and safety standards are maintained
  • Operate Society vehicles in a professional and safe manner while observing all mandated passenger safety procedures and traffic safety regulations
  • Perform cleaning duties as outlined in the Ozanam Center’s cleaning schedules
  • Direct delivery program activities may require a moderate level of physical fitness
  • Perform other related duties as required

Additional Key Worker Duties

  • It is expected that all Ozanam staff working full time in the program are key workers and that participants are evenly distributed amongst full time staff.
  • Key workers are assigned based on Participant preference and staff skills, interests and knowledge.
  • Assigned responsibility will be changed regularly to ensure that responsibility and demands are equitably distributed amongst staff with consideration for the above preferences.

 

Responsibilities of a key worker

  • Know assigned participant’s protocols, history and personal binders
  • Ensure participant documents are reviewed at staff meetings
  • Sign in new med packs and ensure monthly MAR sheets are in the medication binders.
  • Review participant tracking in ShareVision for patterns or changes in behavior and highlight to management as needed
  • Check in with participants daily
  • Be the primary contact for participants at the program, specifically: 
    • All staff are expected to direct participant to key worker
    • Be the direct line of communication with homes and management
    • Keeping co-workers informed about necessary information about assigned participant
    • Ensure the participant is prepared for the day’s activities. i.e. has lunch, appropriate dress etc.
    • Check in with new staff and on-calls to ensure they are familiar with protocols or special information required to support participant

 

WorkSafeBC Responsibilities

  • A worker includes volunteers for the purpose of these responsibilities.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all workers under your direct supervision.
  • Know the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are met.
  • Ensure workers under your supervision are aware of all known hazards.
  • Ensure workers under your supervision have the appropriate personal protective equipment, which is being used properly, regularly inspected, and maintained.
  • Be alert to hazards. Report them immediately to your supervisor or employer.
  • Follow safe work procedures and act safely in the workplace at all times.
  • Use the protective clothing, devices, and equipment provided. Be sure to wear them properly.
  • Co-operate with joint occupational health and safety committees, worker health and safety representatives, WorkSafeBC prevention officers, and anybody with health and safety duties.
  •  SSVP COVID -19 Health & Safety Training will be mandatory prior to first day with participants

 

Qualifications:

Education

  • A diploma in human services or a related field (Community Support Worker, Resident Care Attendant) or 2 years’ experience working with Adults with Developmental Disabilities.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the care of people with developmental disabilities

Required training

  • Certificate in medication administration
  • Certificate in First Aid with CPR and AED
  • Approved Ministry of Justice Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Class 4 unrestricted drivers license preferred, other drivers license classifications will be accepted.  Wage will reflect classification of driver’s license
  • Approved Driver’s Abstract

Experience

  • Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs and related provincial and community support is preferred.
  • Excellent cooperative interpersonal communication skills with public, participants, management, and co-workers in a team environment
  • Can work in group and one-on-one settings

  • Knowledge of equipment used in your area of responsibility
